10 Questions for 10 Years

Time certainly does fly when you're having fun, and our journey with Hardy Brands is no exception.

Ten years have passed since our humble beginnings as AMS, and over that time, we've grown, shifted, and changed into something that has affected so many businesses, individuals, and communities. We're beyond grateful for the opportunities that our growth has afforded us. We've had the chance to work with numerous businesses in a variety of industries that trust us with their brand, and we do not take that responsibility lightly.

And here we stand, ten years in the making. We've learned so much and are proud of what we are today.

Rather than take you on a walk down memory lane, we wanted to give an insightful, first-hand look into the mind of the founder and President of Hardy Brands, Megan Armstrong Wold. Ten years, ten thought-provoking questions. Let's go!

This year we celebrate Hardy's 10th Anniversary. What thoughts and emotions come to mind when you think about that?
I think about the feeling of fear and excitement the day I started the company. I then think about the years of clients, employees, subcontractors, partners, supportive friends, and family - this company has touched so many people and enriched so many businesses. I can honestly say that all of it has been a good experience for growth, learning, and excitement.

What inspired you to start Hardy Brands?
Like most people that start businesses, I saw a need for marketing support in Southwest Montana. But honestly, it was God. I had started exploring starting my own business, and it seemed like financially I could go out on my own.

At the time, I was working in the advertising department of a local newspaper, and I had begun to not like my job. So, I started praying about it - I had consulted with a local business owner about starting my own company, so I asked God to have him call me in an hour and say he wanted to be my first client. Then I took it back, got ready, and went to work. Within an hour, my phone rang, and it was him! The owner of Sacajawea Hotel in Three Forks, MT, called and said he wanted to be my first client, so I walked into my boss's office and put in my two weeks.

How has Hardy's path changed from how you first imagined AMS?
I never thought the business would grow so much! I thought it would be me and maybe one or two others. The company has grown naturally out of need and demand and has turned into a beautiful thing that really has nothing to do with me.

Describe running Hardy Brands in one sentence
It's like you're running a long race that is full of obstacles, but you never get tired, and you love every minute of it.

Describe the most pivotal moments of the past ten years of the business

  • Utilizing a budget: Around year 3, we implemented a company budget which made a large difference in our financials.
  • Hiring our first employee: This opened the door to building our team.
  • Dialing in our brand process: By systematizing what we do and who we are, we've been able to differentiate ourselves from the competition.
  • Buying an office space: By moving into a space we own, the team has room and flexibility to grow.
  • Rebranding: We had a brand gap, and now we're able to communicate better with our ideal customers. For more info, check out our blog: Why We Decided to Rebrand.

What do you see as the biggest company accomplishment?
Our inclusive and supportive culture. We put a lot into our clients, community, and people.

What is one thing you wish you had known before you started Hardy?
How to run a business!

What has been your most significant "learning moment" in the last ten years?
There have been so many. I have them every day. These "ah ha" moments help us to adjust to be better. But operating off a budget was probably the biggest thing.
It seems odd that companies would not have a budget, but you would be surprised. Adopting a budget was a game changer in how we operate and our bottom line. The company supports too many people not to be financially responsible so we can keep doing what we do.

What has been the most rewarding moment?
I can't choose just one moment, but I will tell you two things that always get me in the feels:
One, when the team wins. The smile on their faces and the proud look they have when they have created something amazing.
Two, when the client is excited and proud of the work, they want to stand behind it and march into the world using their new brand.

Looking forward, what's your biggest hope for the next decade of Hardy Brands?
There is an electric competitiveness (in a good, non-competitive way) in the office around always improving, learning, and growing as individuals. This fire propels the team and the work; the clients feel it too. I hope we can continue to be so driven and inspiring for everyone who gets to engage with Hardy Brands.

Before we get back to work building great brands, here are our final thoughts. We at Hardy Brands are looking forward to ten more outstanding years. We couldn't have gotten to where we are today without our clients, team, communities, and supporters presenting us with challenges and constantly pushing us to improve.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
